New Waste Management Service Starts in January: Key Details for Residents

Refuse and Recycling Service Transition Begins Next Week

The Village of Union Grove will transition to Waste Management (WM) for refuse and recycling services beginning the first week of January. Below is an overview of what residents can expect during the changeover.

New Cart Delivery

Delivery of the new 96-gallon WM trash and recycling carts will take place the week of December 15. Trucks will be moving through neighborhoods throughout the week. Residents are asked to leave space at the end of their driveways so the carts can be dropped off safely.

Each household will receive one trash cart and one recycling cart. When placing the carts for collection, keep at least three feet between them and three feet from any obstacles, with the wheels facing your house. All items must fit inside the carts for pickup.

Use of Johns Disposal Carts During the Transition

Residents will have both sets of carts for roughly two weeks. During this period, please continue using your Johns Disposal carts until Johns completes their final pickups and removes their equipment. WM service does not begin until early January.

Johns Disposal Cart Removal

As Johns Disposal concludes its service contract, the company will remove their carts and dumpsters on the following schedule:

  • December 23: Approximately half of the recycling carts will be collected after their final pickup.

  • December 30, 31, and January 2: Remaining carts and dumpsters will be removed.

If a resident is out of town or their carts are missed, Johns will arrange a central drop-off point where remaining carts can be returned.

Collection Schedule Under WM

Beginning in January, collection days in Union Grove will shift to Thursdays and Fridays. Recycling will be collected every other week, with the entire Village following the same recycling schedule. Yard waste and monthly bulk pickup schedules will remain unchanged.

Because of the New Year’s holiday, WM’s first collection will take place on January 2 and 3.

Mailers and Cart Tags

Residents will receive informational mailers on December 22. Cart tags attached to the new WM carts will provide placement instructions and recycling guidelines to help ensure smooth service.
