Public Notice – Wastewater Bypass Event

The Village of Union Grove Utilities Department is providing notice of a sanitary sewer bypass that occurred on April 18, 2026, due to significant rainfall and system capacity being exceeded.

Recent heavy rain and saturated ground conditions resulted in elevated flows within the sanitary sewer system. To prevent damage to homes and infrastructure, controlled bypasses were necessary.

What occurred:

  • Lift Station (Milldrum St. & 18th Ave):
Approximately 15,000 gallons of diluted wastewater was discharged to the storm sewer between 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. (30 minutes).
  • Wastewater Treatment Plant:
Approximately 200,000 gallons of diluted wastewater was discharged through the overflow pipe into the basin that flows to the West Branch of the Root River between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (14 hours). This is the same discharge location used during normal plant operations.

These actions were taken to relieve pressure on the system and reduce the risk of basement backups and other property damage.

All bypass events have been reported to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in accordance with state requirements.

The Village continues to monitor system conditions and appreciates the public’s understanding.
